We are honoured to be able to place on this website, a page dedicated to the achievements of the late Group Captain Terence John Arbuthnot RAF who was the Station Commanding Officer at Fiskerton in the final stages of the war. May we express Our gratitude to Mr Robin Arbuthnot, G/Cpt Arbuthnots’s Son for supplying the information and the images on this page. As C/O of Fiskerton, G/Cpt Arbuthnot was not required to fly on ops- having completed his operational flying earlier in the war. However, in an example of leadership and courage to the young aircrew who he saw at the briefings, he flew on the following operations: 29/11/44, 2nd pilot to S/Ldr Dutton, target was Dortmund 17/12/44, 2nd pilot to S/Ldr Dutton, target was Ulm, 13/2/45, 2nd pilot to S/Ldr Rooke, target was Dresden, 28/2/45, as pilot, target was Cleaves (sqn recalled en route to target) 1/3/45, as pilot, target was Mannheim, 30/4/45. as pilot, target was Duluft 7/5/45(last day of the war) as pilot, target was The Hague

Records indicate that Grp/Capt Arbuthnot having passed through RAF Collage Cranwell as a Flight Cadet was granted permanent commission as Pilot Officer with seniority on 11th December 1926. Promoted to Flying Officer 11th June 1928 . Promoted Flight Lt 1st April 1932. On 1st April 1937 Terry was promoted Sqn Ldr. On 1st June 1940 Terry was promoted Wing/Cmdr and Officer Commanding 26 Squadron. The Squadron was sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force in June 1940. Terry,s promotion to Group Captain (Permanent) was confirmed on 1st October 1946.

The Grp/Cpt seen with his Navigator in front of an Armstrong Whitworth Albermarle at Bicester airfield in 1942. The Grp/Cpt was given 2 of the 3 pre production airframes to Test for Day and Night flying. These aircraft origionally designed as Bombers were designated for Glider Towing Duties.

Date of picture not certain,probable 1937 to 1939. The aircraft is A Hawker Hind Light Bomber.This was the last Biplane to serve with the RAF .Some 581 Hinds were produced between 1934 and 1937 when the last Hind rolled off the assembly line. This type were withdrawn from front line service in June 1939. The main characteristic of this type were the "Rams horn" exahust pipes as seen in this picture. Terence is seen in the front row with the Moustache, His rank possibly that of Sqn Ldr.
